Buyer's Checklist

Selecting a company to handle the installation of your kitchen or bathroom cabinets and countertops can be a daunting task. We've compiled a list of items you should keep in mind when you are making that decision.

1. Make sure you are compare comparable products and services. For example:

Door Style
Material Used
Hardware
Construction Methods Used

Every manufacturer uses different construction methods and, in some cases, different material in certain places. These differences will have to be judged by you as to whether they are acceptable or not.

2. Pricing from various contractors should be done on the same schematic drawings so as to establish a fair playing field. If a cabinet designer is confident about the product they are marketing, there shouldn't be a problem establishing a fair playing field.

3. Check the reputation of the contractor.

Request to see some previously completed jobs
Get telephone numbers of recent clients
Do they do any work for any homebuilders that are members of the new home certification program?

4. When a renovation is being started in a kitchen or bathroom, there are always things that will be encountered at the end of the cabinet installation. Try to make sure the responsibility for these final tasks is established before you reward the contract.

5. Find out what the final price will be.
